2023 AVMA/AVMF 2nd Opportunity Summer Research Stipend

Overview

The AVMA/AVMF 2nd Opportunity Summer Research Stipend is intended to provide support for currently enrolled veterinary students who have previously conducted a summer research project and are seeking to gain a second summer of research experience. Five $6,000 awards have been provided in 2023.

Meet the 2023 AVMA/AVMF 2nd Opportunity Summer Research Stipend recipients

University of Wisconsin-Madison

Nicola Brown

“I am exceedingly grateful for this support my research and my professional skills as I pursue a career in veterinary medical research and surgery. I will continue to develop a virtual mechanical analysis of racehorse bones as a tool for injury prevention, learning from and collaborating with veterinarians and scientists. I am honored to receive this opportunity and excited to delve further into the field of research while advancing my skills and gaining experience vital for my future career.”

University of California-Davis

Rachel Hirota

“I am truly grateful to the AVMA and AVMF for the opportunity to pursue my project on developing reference intervals for blood lipids and lipoproteins in cockatiels this summer. Last summer, I had the chance to work on pharmacodynamics of sedative combinations in Great Horned Owls. This scholarship not only enables me to grow as a researcher, but to explore my passions for avian health and science communication in new ways.”

Purdue University

Lisa Hoard

“I am honored to be a recipient of the AVMA/AVMF 2nd Opportunity Research Scholarship. This scholarship will allow me to continue my research in Dr. Shin Ae Park’s laboratory, studying biomechanical changes associated with glaucoma. I am grateful to contribute to such important research, as glaucoma remains the leading cause of incurable blindness in both animals and humans worldwide.”

The Ohio State University

Kaitlin Ingram

“I am deeply honored and thrilled to have been selected as the recipient of the AVMA/AVMF 2nd Summer Opportunity Research Scholarship. This support will provide me with the means to immerse myself in canine microbiome science this summer, delving into the complexities of gastrointestinal microbial communities and their dynamic interactions with disease pathology. Through this exploration, I aim to illuminate novel insights that may inform our approach to understanding and treating these conditions.”

Texas A&M University

Kayleigh Shumaker

“I will continue to investigate mechanisms behind impaired fracture healing in Down Syndrome mice. This work is very exciting and rewarding as it is an opportunity to impact paradigms of fracture treatment in people with Down Syndrome and apply new understanding of impaired fracture healing to fracture nonunion in canine patients. This scholarship will help me to further refine my career goals and support my development as a future veterinary clinician scientist.”
