Disaster relief for Maui

On August 8, warnings were issued for all Hawaiian Islands for high winds caused by Hurricane Dora. That day, fires ignited on the Big Island of Hawaii. The next day, three fires devastated the idyllic island of Maui. Eight thousand people were evacuated. Sadly, more than 100 people and countless animals never made it to safety.

Our hearts go out to the people and animals of Maui. In response to devastating fires on the island, AVMF has directed $30,000 to support relief efforts on the ground, including immediate veterinary medical care efforts, food and shelter for displaced animals, and emergency aid for veterinarians personally impacted by the disaster.

“The damage on Maui is immense, and we encourage our members and others to join us in giving what they can to help the victims and ease the suffering,” says Dr. Lori Teller, chair of the AVMF and immediate past president of the AVMA.

Join us—together we can make a difference. Give nowselect “Disaster Relief” from the dropdown menu on the next page. Then check “I would like to dedicate this in honor of or memory of someone.” and enter “Maui” for the name.

If you are an AVMA member who has either personally or professionally been impacted by the Maui fires, please be sure to check out the AVMF disaster relief programs.
